It might seem audacious for analyses full of objections and corrections to be published against pastors who are believed by our local churchgoers to have been chosen by God to do what they do. But it would be irresponsible for someone who knows better to say nothing about something that needs to be spoken of.

One should at least take a shot at informing people of the delusion they subject themselves to every Sunday. The analyses, of course, have been done, not against pastors, but for them. It is better that they be told their faults than that they be flattered and praised. A just accusation of wrongdoing is an act never to be repented of because that is precisely what the apostle Paul did and would do if he were here. Moreover, our criticism has concerned the content of sermons, not the character of persons. Naturally, it is good and right to call a pastor a hireling or a wolf in sheep’s clothing if the man is clearly attempting to deceive.

It is not slanderous to do that. The disguised wolf and the negligent hireling are Bible characters that we are warned to beware of, after all. The apostle named names. “Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil” (2 Timothy 4.14.) We name names as well because no greater evil is being done than falsely assuring sinners of salvation from the pulpit. To casually promise heaven to nonchalant sinners is to do ‘much evil.’
